PREFACE THE scope of this book is limited to the presentation of the history of the American Church in those aspects which help towards an understanding of its peculiar problems and local and national environment. The Catholic Church is one and the same everywhere. The life of the Catholic Church at different periods and among various nationalities and political circumstances emphasises certain related features. The drawing together during the war of allied nations has deepened or created a desire on the part of the Church among such nations to understand better the characteristics which underlie the Christian presentation of the Church. This volume is intended to be a contribution to such fuller appreciation and understanding, rather than a detailed history of the American Church, written primarily for American Churchmen.
