The article preceding the “Personal Recollections” entitled “The Impending Afghan War” also seems to have been authored by Hughes or at least based on material he provided. The Graphic 18 (November 16, 1878): 505-510. Another article on “Afghanistan.” The Graphic 18 (October 5, 1878): 345-347, may also be Hughes’ work, though his hand is not so clearly evident. A note in his Journal (p. 145) mentions that he wrote Afghan articles for the London Graphic in 1878.
