PRAYER IN PREPARATION BEFORE THE HIGH ALTAR.

O Jesus, my adorable Saviour, behold me prostrate at Thy feet, imploring Thy mercy. Vouchsafe to apply to my soul the infinite merits of Thy Passion, on which I am now about to meditate. Grant that while I follow Thee along this Way of Sorrows, my heart may be so touched with true contrition, that I may be willing to accept cheerfully for Thy sake all the sufferings and humiliations of this my pilgrimage on earth. Amen.

V. O Lord, open Thou our lips.
R. And our mouth shall shew forth Thy praise.
V. O God, make speed to save us.
R. O Lord, make haste to help us.
V. Glory be to the Father.
R. As it was in the beginning.

PASSING TO FIRST STATION.

From pain to pain, from woe to woe,
With loving hearts and footsteps slow,
To Calvary with Christ we go.
See how His precious Blood at every station pours;
Was ever grief like His? Was ever sin like ours?

OR

LITANY OF THE WAY OF THE CROSS.

God the Father, God the Son,
God the Spirit, Three in One,
Hear us from Thy Heavenly Throne,
Spare us, Holy Trinity.

As we follow in the way
Of Thy Holy Cross, we pray,
Spare us in the Judgment Day,
Spare us, Holy Jesu.

Fix our hearts and thoughts on Thee,
That Thy Love to us may be
Known and loved eternally,
Hear us, Holy Jesu.

OR

THE STORY OF THE CROSS.

Follow to Calvary, tread where He trod,
He Who forever was Son of God,
As the swift moments fly through the Blest Week,
Read the great story the Cross will teach.

OR

STABAT MATER DOLOROSA.

By the Cross sad vigil keeping.
Stood the Mother doleful weeping,
Where her Son extended hung;
For her soul, of joy bereaved,
Bowed with anguish, deeply grieved,
Lo! the piercing sword hath wrung.

FIRST STATION.

JESUS CONDEMNED TO DEATH.

V. We adore Thee, O Christ, and we bless Thee.
R. Because by Thy Cross and precious Blood Thou hast redeemed the world.

MEDITATION

Jesus after leaving the house of Caiaphas, where He had been blasphemed, and the palace of Herod, where He had been mocked, is dragged before Pilate; His back is torn with scourges; His head is crowned with thorns, and He Who on the last day will judge the living and the dead, is condemned to a shameful death.

PRAYER

O innocent Jesus, Who with wonderful submission wast for our sakes condemned to die. Grant that we may bear in mind that our sins were the false-witnesses: our blasphemies, backbitings, and evil speakings were the cause of Thy accepting with gladness the sentence of the impious Judge. Oh may this thought touch our hearts and make us hate those sins which caused Thy death. Amen.

ACT OF CONTRITION.

O God, I am sorry I have offended Thee who art so good. Forgive me for Jesus' sake and I will try to sin no more.

Our Father, who art in heaven. Hallowed be thy Name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth, As it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, As we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation; But deliver us from evil. Amen.

Hail, Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee; blessed art thou among women and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death.

V. O Saviour of the world, who by thy Cross and precious Blood hast redeemed us.
R. Save us and help us, we humbly beseech Thee O Lord.

PASSING TO NEXT STATION.

From pain to pain, from woe to woe,
With loving hearts and footsteps slow,
To Calvary with Christ we go.
See how His precious Blood at every station pours;
Was ever grief like His? Was ever sin like ours?

SECOND STATION.

JESUS RECEIVES HIS CROSS.

V. We adore Thee, O Christ, and we bless Thee.
R. Because by Thy Cross and precious Blood Thou hast redeemed the world.

MEDITATION

A heavy cross is laid upon the bruised shoulders of Jesus. He receives it with meekness, nay with a secret joy, for it is the instrument with which He will redeem the world.

PRAYER

O blessed Jesus, grant me by virtue of Thy Cross and bitter Passion, cheerfully to submit to and willingly to embrace all the trials and difficulties of this my earthly pilgrimage, and may I be always ready to atek up my cross daily and follow Thee.

See how His precious Blood at every station pours;
Was ever grief like His? Was ever sin like ours?

OR

Jesus now Thy Cross receive,
Help us as we would believe,
Thou for all our sins dost grieve,
Hear us Holy Jesu.

OR

Oh, whither wandering, bear they that tree?
He who first carries it, Who is He?
Yes, let Thy Cross be borne each day by me,
Mind not how heavy, if but with Thee.

THIRD STATION.

JESUS FALLS UNDER THE WEIGHT OF THE CROSS.

V. We adore Thee, O Christ, and we bless Thee.
R. Because by Thy Cross and precious Blood Thou hast redeemed the world.

MEDITATION

Jesus bowed down under the weight of the Cross, slowly sets forth on the way to Calvary, amidst the mockings and insults of the crowd. His Agony in the Garden has exhausted His Body: He is sore with blows and wounds, His strength fails Him, He falls to the ground under the weight of the Cross.

PRAYER

O Jesus, Who for our sins didst bear the heavy burden of the Cross and didst fall under its weight, may the thought of Thy sufferings make us watchful against temptation, and do Thou stretch out Thy sacred hand to help us lest we fall into any grievous sin.

See how His precious Blood at every station pours;
Was ever grief like His? Was ever sin like ours?

OR

Saviour bearing all my sin,
Falling to the ground in pain,
Dust and blood Thy face doth stain,
Hear us, Holy Jesu.

OR

Child of My grief and pain. Watched by My love,
I came to call thee to realms above,
I saw thee wandering far off from Me;
In love I seek for thee, do not flee.

FOURTH STATION.

JESUS IS MET BY HIS BLESSED MOTHER.

V. We adore Thee, O Christ, and we bless Thee.
R. Because by Thy Cross and precious Blood Thou hast redeemed the world.

MEDITATION

Still burdened with His Cross, and wounded yet more by His fall, Jesus proceeds on His way. He is met by His Mother. What a meeting must that have been! What a sword of anguish must have pierced that Mother's bosom! What must have been the compassion of that Son for His holy Mother!

PRAYER

O Jesus, by the compassion which Thou didst feel for Thy Mother, have compassion on us, and give us a share in her intercession. O Mary, most afflicted Mother! Intercede for us, that through the sufferings of Thy Son we may be delivered from the wrath to come.

See how His precious Blood at every station pours;
Was ever grief like His? Was ever sin like ours?

OR

By the love Thou didst afford
To Thy Mother, gracious Lord,
Son of Mary, Son of God,
Hear us, Holy Jesu.

OR

Gazing far from Thee, silent and lone,
Stand those few weepers Thou call'st thine own.
What, O my Saviour, here didst Thou see,
Which made Thee suffer and die for me?

FIFTH STATION.

THE CROSS IS LAID UPON SIMON OF CYRENE.

V. We adore Thee, O Christ, and we bless Thee.
R. Because by Thy Cross and precious Blood Thou hast redeemed the world.

MEDITATION

Simon of Cyrene was compelled to help Jesus carry His Cross, and Jesus accepted his assistance. How willingly would He also permit you to carry the Cross: He calls, but you hear Him not; He invites you, but you decline. What a reproach to bear the Cross reluctantly!

PRAYER

O Jesus! I thank Thee, that Thou hast permitted me to suffer with Thee, may it be my privilege to bear my cross, may I glory in nothing else; by it may the world be crucified unto me, and I unto the world, may I never shrink from suffering, but rather rejoice, if I be counted worthy to suffer for Thy Name's sake.

See how His precious Blood at every station pours;
Was ever grief like His? Was ever sin like ours?

OR

Thou Who at the city gate
Lettest Simon bear the weight
Of Thy Cross to consecrate,
Hear us, Holy Jesu.

OR

Heavy that Cross to Him, weary the weight,
One who will help Him waits at the gate.
See! they are traveling on the same road,
Simon is sharing with Him the load.

SIXTH STATION.

VERONICA WIPES THE FACE OF JESUS.

V. We adore Thee, O Christ, and we bless Thee.
R. Because by Thy Cross and precious Blood Thou hast redeemed the world.

MEDITATION

Veronica, impelled by devotion and compassion, presents her veil to Jesus to wipe his disfigured face. And Jesus imprints on it His holy countenance: a great recompence for so small a service. What return do you make to your Saviour for His great and manifold benefits?

PRAYER

Most merciful Jesus! What return shall I amke for all the benefits Thou didst bestow upon me? Behold I consecrate myself entirely to Thy service. I offer and consecrate to Thee my heart: imprint on it Thy sacred image, never again to be effaced by sin.

See how His precious Blood at every station pours;
Was ever grief like His? Was ever sin like ours?

OR

Of Thy mercy and Thy grace,
Print upon our hearts Thy face,
And all stain of sin erase,
Hear us, Holy Jesu.

OR

You who would love Him, stand, gaze at His face;
Tarry awhile on your earthly race.
Lord, if Thou only wilt make me Thine own,
Give no companion, save Thee alone.

SEVENTH STATION.

JESUS FALLS THE SECOND TIME.

V. We adore Thee, O Christ, and we bless Thee.
R. Because by Thy Cross and precious Blood Thou hast redeemed the world.

MEDITATION

The suffering Jesus, under the weight of His Cross, again falls to the ground; but the cruel executioners do not permit Him to rest a moment. Pushing and striking Him, they urge Him onward. It is the frequent repetition of our sins which oppress Jesus. Witnessing this, how can I continue to sin?

PRAYER

O Jesus, Son of David! Have mercy on me. Offer my Thy helping hand, and aid me, that I may not fall again into my former sins. From this very moment I will earnestly strive to reform: nevermore will I sin! Thou, O sole support of the weak, by Thy grace, without which I can do nothing, strengthen me to carry out faithfully this my resolution.

See how His precious Blood at every station pours;
Was ever grief like His? Was ever sin like ours?

OR

Jesus, falling once again
'Neath Thy Cross of woe and pain,
That Thy grace we may obtain,
Hear us, Holy Jesu.

OR

I saw thee wandering far off from Me;
In love I seek for thee, do not flee.
For thee My blood I shed, for thee alone;
I came to purchase thee for Mine own.

EIGHTH STATION.

THE WOMEN OF JERUSALEM MOURN FOR OUR LORD.

V. We adore Thee, O Christ, and we bless Thee.
R. Because by Thy Cross and precious Blood Thou hast redeemed the world.

MEDITATION

At the sight of the sufferings of Jesus, some holy women in the crowd were so touched with sympathy, that they openly bewailed and lamented Him. Jesus, knowing the things that were to come to pass upon Jerusalem because of their rejection of Him, turned to them, and said, "Daughters of Jerusalem, weep not for Me, but weep for yourselves and for your children."

PRAYER

O Lord Jesus, we mourn and will mourn both for Thee and for ourselves; for Thy sufferings, and for our sins which caused them. Oh, teach us so to mourn, that we may be comforted, and escape those dreadful judgments prepared for all those who reject or neglect Thee.

See how His precious Blood at every station pours;
Was ever grief like His? Was ever sin like ours?

OR

Thou didst see the women weep
For Thyself, and bidst them keep
All their tears for their own grief,
Hear us, Holy Jesu.

OR

In His own raiment clad, with His Blood dyed;
Women walk sorrowing by His side.
Weep not for My grief, child of My love,
Strive to be with Me in Heaven above.

NINTH STATION.

JESUS FALLS THE THIRD TIME.

V. We adore Thee, O Christ, and we bless Thee.
R. Because by Thy Cross and precious Blood Thou hast redeemed the world.

MEDITATION

Jesus arriving exhausted at the foot of Calvary falls for the third time to the ground. His love for us, however, is not diminished, not extinguished. What a fearfully oppressive burden our sins must be to cause Jesus to fall so often! Had He, however, not taken them upon Himself, they would have plunged us into the abyss of hell.

PRAYER

Most merciful Jesus! I return Thee infinite thanks for not permitting me to continue in sin and to fall, as I have so often deserved, into the depths of hell. Enkindle in me an earnest desire of amendment; let me never again relapse, but vouchsafe me the grace to persevere in penitence to the end of my life.

See how His precious Blood at every station pours;
Was ever grief like His? Was ever sin like ours?

OR

Jesus falling on the ground
Looks for pity, but has found
No relief from those around,
Hear us, Holy Jesu.

OR

Oh, I will follow Thee, Star of my soul,
Thro' the deep shades of life to the goal.
Yes, let Thy Cross be borne each day by me,
Mind not how heavy, if but with Thee.

TENTH STATION.

JESUS IS STRIPPED OF HIS GARMENTS.

V. We adore Thee, O Christ, and we bless Thee.
R. Because by Thy Cross and precious Blood Thou hast redeemed the world.

MEDITATION

Jesus having arrived at last at the place of sacrifice, His murderers prepare to crucify Him. His garments are torn from His bleeding Body, and He the Holy of Holies stands exposed to the vulgar gaze of the rude and scoffing multitude.

PRAYER

O Lord Jesus! Thou didst suffer shame for our most shameful deeds, Take from us, we beseech Thee, all false shame, conceit, and pride, and make us so to humble ourselves in this life, that we may escape everlasting shame in the life to come.

See how His precious Blood at every station pours;
Was ever grief like His? Was ever sin like ours?

OR

Jesus for my sake made poor,
Mocked and scourged and wounded sore,
Make me love Thee evermore,
Hear us, Holy Jesu.

OR

Thorns form Thy diadem, rough wood Thy throne,
For us Thy Blood is shed, us alone,
I see Thy title, Lord, inscribed above,
Jesus of Nazareth, King of Love.

ELEVENTH STATION.

JESUS IS NAILED TO THE CROSS.

V. We adore Thee, O Christ, and we bless Thee.
R. Because by Thy Cross and precious Blood Thou hast redeemed the world.

MEDITATION

The Cross is laid upon the ground, and Jesus is stretched upon His bed of death. At one and the same time He offers His bruised Limbs to His Heavenly Father, in behalf of sinful man, and to His fierce executioners to be nailed by them to the Tree of shame. The blows are struck; the blood gushes forth.

PRAYER

O Jesus, crucified for me! subdue my heart with thy holy fear and love, and since my sins were the cruel nails that pierced thee, grant that in sorrow for my past life I may pierce and nail to thy Cross all that offends thee.

See how His precious Blood at every station pours;
Was ever grief like His? Was ever sin like ours?

OR

Saviour Who Thyself dost give
On the Cross that we may live,
What our sins have caused, forgive,
Hear us, Holy Jesu.

OR

No pillow under Thee to rest Thy Head,
Only the splintered Cross is Thy bed.
Nails pierce Thy Hands and Feet, Thy Side the spear;
No voice is nigh, to say help is near.

TWELFTH STATION.

JESUS DIES UPON THE CROSS.

V. We adore Thee, O Christ, and we bless Thee.
R. Because by Thy Cross and precious Blood Thou hast redeemed the world.

MEDITATION

Jesus has hung from the third until the ninth hour upon the Cross; the weight of his Body is borne by His pierced Hands. His Blood has run in streams down His Body, and bedewed the ground; in the midst of excruciating sufferings He has pardoned His murderers, promised the bliss of paradise to the penitent thief, and committed His blessed Mother and beloved disciple to each other's care. All is now consummated, and meekly bowing down His Head, he gives up the Ghost.

PRAYER

O Jesus! we devoutly embrace that honoured Cross, where Thou didst love us even unto death. In Thy Death is all our hope. Henceforth let us live only unto Thee, so that whether we live or we die we may be Thine.

See how His precious Blood at every station pours;
Was ever grief like His? Was ever sin like ours?

OR

Jesus dying pity me,
Pardon my iniquity,
And in death remember me,
Hear us, Holy Jesu.

OR

Loud is Thy bitter cry; sunk on Thy breast
Hangeth Thy bleeding Head without rest.
Is there no beauty to you who pass by,
In that lone figure which marks that sky?

THIRTEENTH STATION.

JESUS IS TAKEN DOWN FROM THE CROSS.

V. We adore Thee, O Christ, and we bless Thee.
R. Because by Thy Cross and precious Blood Thou hast redeemed the world.

MEDITATION

Jesus did not descend from the Cross, but remained on it until He died. And when taken down from it, He, in death as in life, rested on the bosom of His Mother. Persevere in your resolutions of reform and do not part from the Cross: he who persevereth to the end shall be saved. Consider, moreover, how pure the heart should be that receives the Body and Blood of Christ in the Adorable Sacrament of the Altar.

PRAYER

O Lord Jesus! Thy lifeless Body, mangled and lacerated, found a worthy resting-place on the bosom of Thy Virgin MOther. Have I not often compelled Thee to dwell in my heart, full of sin and impurity as it was? Create in me a new heart, that I may worthily receive Thy most Sacred Body in Holy Commuynion, and that Thou mayest remain in me and I in Thee, for all eternity.

See how His precious Blood at every station pours;
Was ever grief like His? Was ever sin like ours?

OR

Jesus taken from the Tree,
Placed upon Thy Mother's knee,
Give to me her love for Thee,
Hear us, Holy Jesu.

OR

Oh, I will follow Thee, Star of my soul,
Thro' the deep shades of life to the goal.
Grant through each day of life to stand by Thee;
With Thee when morning breaks ever to be.

FOURTEENTH STATION.

JESUS IS LAID IN THE SEPULCHRE.

V. We adore Thee, O Christ, and we bless Thee.
R. Because by Thy Cross and precious Blood Thou hast redeemed the world.

MEDITATION

The Body of Jesus is laid by His disciples in the tomb. The tomb is closed, and there the lifeless Body remains until the hour of Its glorious Resurrection.

PRAYER

O Jesus, most compassionate Lord, we adore Thee dead and enclosed in the Holy Sepulchre. We desire to enclose Thee within our hearts, that united to Thee, we may rise to newness of life, and by the gift of final perseverance die in Thy grace.

From pain to pain, from woe to woe,
With loving hearts and footsteps slow,
To Calvary with Christ we go.
See how His precious Blood at every station pours;
Was ever grief like His? Was ever sin like ours?

OR

Offspring of a Virgin's womb,
Thou art laid within the tomb,
Soon to drive away its gloom,
Hear us, Holy Jesu.

OR

Behold the garden fold wherein they laid,
Loving, His lifeless form, bold yet afraid.
See, in their hands they bear spices most sweet,
His Body to anoint as it is meet.

PRAYER IN CONCLUSION BEFORE THE BLESSED SACRAMENT.

Antiphon. Christ became obedient unto death, even the death of the Cross.

Almighty God, we beseech Thee graciously to behold this Thy family, for which our Lord Jesus Christ was contented to be betrayed, and given up into the hands of wicked men, and to suffer death upon the Cross, Who now liveth and reigneth with Thee and the Holy Ghost, ever One God, world without end. Amen.

Soul of Christ, sanctify me!
Body of Christ, save me!
Blood of Christ, inebriate me!
Water from the side of Christ, wash me!
Passion of Christ, strengthen me!
O good Jesu, hear me!
Within Thy wounds, hide me!
Suffer me not to be separated from Thee!
From the malicious enemy, defend me!
In the hour of my death, call me
And bid me come to Thee;
That with Thy saints I may praise Thee
For ever and ever. AMEN.

Benediction. May our Lord Jesus Christ, Who for our sakes was scourged, made to bear His Cross, and crucified bless us, and keep us from all sin. Amen.

From pain to pain, from woe to woe,
With loving hearts and footsteps slow,
To Calvary with Christ we go.
See how His precious Blood at every station pours;
Was ever grief like His? Was ever sin like ours?

OR

Pilgrims of the Cross we tread
On the Way which Thou hast led,
Saviour of the quick and dead,
Hear us, Holy Jesu.

Grant, O loving Lord, that we
Evermore may follow Thee,
That Thy glory we may see.
Hear us, Holy Jesu.

OR

Lord, if Thou only wilt make me Thine own,
Give no companion, save Thee alone.
Grant through each day of lifeto stand by Thee;
With Thee, when morning breaks ever to be.
