PREFACE WHEN the author was first asked to write this book it was intended that the life should be a book of considerable size, but it was found on inquiry that the cost of such a book in good print would be too great to allow of its sale at a popular price, and so, by the desire of the Board of Missions, the book was reduced to very much less than its contemplated size. The writer has tried to adapt himself to the new conditions, and to make the book interesting to the general public, though its brevity may reasonably disappoint those who knew and loved its subject. Any profits from its sale will go to the A.B.M. The writer has, with permission, drawn freely on the writings of the present Bishop of New Guinea and on the A. B. M. and New Guinea Reports. He has also to thank many friends of Mr. King, who kindly supplied him with letters and information. The copies of the excellent photographs were supplied by A.B.M., and are in many cases the work of the well-known expert Captain Hurley.
